Choosing your roleplay character
It's a simple question with a simple answer: play what you want.
There is no cap on characters, but it's expected that you'll be able to manage the characters you take on.
But maybe you want to choose one or two characters to be your 'main' and you want them to have
consistent plot relevance and fun interactions, there are a few things you can do to ensure that you pick a character that
doesn't feel like they don't have much to offer.
Canon Characters before Original Characters,
and Main Story characters before Side Characters
Characters like Phoenix Wright, Miles Edgeworth, Godot, Apollo Justice, ect are main characters.
This means that they've got a lot of versatility in approaching and being approached, veruses someone like Penny.
There are a lot of potential conversation threads to have with main characters and a lot of relationships that come pre-packaged for them.
It becomes very easy to slide into stories when you're playing a main character. One-off characters that primarily
rely on gimmicks(ex: Moe) are fun, but should be taken on as a secondary or a tertiary character. Original
characters are encouraged, but they take more work to get off the ground than canon characters.
AUs, Headcanons,
and 'Do I have to be evil/dead/in jail/ect'
Put simply, no. You can roleplay Damon Gant, you can roleplay him before he ever went to jail,
you can roleplay him after he went to jail if you desire, you can roleplay a young Damon Gant, you can roleplay a Damon Gant that never did anything wrong.
Likewise, you can roleplay a Phoenix Wright that never became a hobo, a Mia Fey that never died,
or a Dahlia Hawthorne that was never caught. Due to the setting, all of these potential character concepts can exist together without issue.
Alternate universe versions of characters are great, and are highly encouraged to spice up canon characters.
If you're playing an alternate universe character, please make sure you state in your profile that they're an AU(stating the specifics of their AU is not necessary).
Please keep in mind that if you're playing a character who has escaped their sentence, they may be regarded with suspicion.
Ask Around
If you're unsure who to play and want a partner, don't be afraid to ask. People may be seeking characters to full storylines they're running("Looking for an Apollo for my Trucy").
Alternatively, you could also test the waters by asking if there's anyone interested in roleplaying with a character you want to play("Does anyone want to RP with my Mia? Especially looking for a Diego!")
Jumping into the roleplay with a partner does a lot to ease the barrier of entry. Being vocal in what you want is one of the best ways to ensure that you get it.
