" .... "
There hasn't been a moment in Vera's life when hasn't lived in fear: of angels and devils, of the unknown and
what it could do to her, of the outside world, of men, of speaking, of death. Vera's life, when not pingponging between
courthouses and institutions, was one of silent suffering. All of those apprehensions, hardened and turned to stone.
Could she really say she remembers a time when she didn't feel its crushing weight? Artwork of painted vistas and carefully
crafted portraits with brushstrokes that scream: 'Help me', 'I'm drowning', 'I can't breathe'!
Vera's arms hug around Klavier, her face buried into his back. She doesn't understand the feeling: there is no anxiety searing
through her chest, there are no scolding whispers of self-deprecation, there is no dread aching her bones. Eyes closed.
Sun on her cheeks. Wind through her hair. Someone in her arms, keeping her in the here and now, he's not a shield she holds up
like the sketchbook but an anchor that she can depend on.
If only the moment could last forever. If only they could just keep riding - if only. With Prosecutor Gavin in her embrace,
she realizes: this is what peace feels like. Her mind is alive with a thousand ideas for the future, a perfectly beautiful man, the source
of all of her creativity, an aspect of the divine, and her mind has been completely penetrated by him. the energy he gives her
is impossible to describe, but she knows that a life without him would rob her of insight for the rest of her life.
And she knows now, more than ever, that Klavier deserves more than the hand fate has dealt him.
She knows his potential - she knows that if he could bless her with a moment's reprieve from the demons, that he could do so,
so much more. And he'll smile, smile, smile. She knows why she started the last project, and she knows what she has to do for the
next one. And above all else: nobody will catch her, nobody will stop her this time.
He didn't deserve this. He didn't deserve to be chained to flesh. This time, she can't fail - she must protect Prosecutor Gavin with all that she is.
" I will liberate you from your broken body. "
she whispers against his shirt, squeezing Klavier.
" Your will is weak and your mind is young - but your potential is limitless like the sky,
where all great things come from, where all great things return to. You'll be given this world, Prosecutor Gavin,
and you'll be given the next. Anything for you. Anything for you. "
As her fingernails sink into his stomach.
